Explanation of Scores: Grade equivalent is a norm-referenced standard score that represents the average performance of students tested near the end of the previous school year.  Grade Equivalents are best used to interpret the performance of groups of students rather than the performance or standing of an individual.  For example, at the end of the last academic year, The Phoenix Schools’ second grade students’ test scores averaged at a level considered equal to the seventh month of a traditional  fourth grade.

Stanine is a standard score that is derived from the Percentile Rank that ranges from 1 to 9 with a mean of 5.  Stanines indicate the grade’s relative standing with respect to other students in the United States in the same grade.  Stanines of 1,2,3 indicate a Below Average Performance; 4,5,6 are Average; and 7,8,9 are Above Average.
