Folsom Campus First Grade
First Grade at the Phoenix Elementary School offers an exciting and fulfilling environment. In our reading program we initiate a love for reading that allows the student to identify story details along with learning to work independently. In math the students demonstrate high quality skills in many multiple areas including regrouping in addition and subtraction double digit facts, along with problem solving techniques. In our language art activities we teach the students to become fluent writers by using a four square method that allows the children to organize their thoughts. Neat D’Nealian handwriting also makes them feel proud of their work. The children are also able to identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Our social studies and science units are related to themes that include learning more about themselves and their surroundings. They learn about the difference between their country, state, and city along with expanding their curiosity level with in class science experiments. Fun events such as field trips that include nature walks, making bread, touching exotic animals, and even seeing live drama theatre enhances their variety of interest. The children learn how to treat each other with respect by practicing life skills daily. The end result is they have a high self-esteem and are happy with whom they are.
